1. Socratic Seminar notes on Greek Heroism #1 - finish and be ready for the Socratic seminar tomorrow.

1. What is going on in Ithaca while Odysseus is gone?
2. How does Penelope keep the suitors from forcing her to marry one of them (213)?
3. Which of the gods decides to help Odysseus after 10 years?  Which one is still mad at him?
4. After ten years, where is Odysseus stuck (213)?
5. How does Athena disguise herself and who does she talk to in Ithaca (214)?
6. After getting help from Mentor (215), who does Telemachus visit first?
7. Who does Telemachus visit second (215-216)?
8. What information does this person have about Odysseus?

1.  Finish reading The Fall of Troy (201-210) and the Fall of Troy questions (see below).

1.  How does Achilles die, and why is he vulnerable in this way?
2.  How does Ajax die?  Is it an honorable death?
3.  How does Paris die?  Why is it partially “his” own fault? (203)
4.  Who comes up with the Trojan Horse idea? (204)

4.  Don't forget to study and work on your vocabulary!

1. What advice does Nestor give?  Does it get Achilles to fight again?
2. How does Hera get the Greeks to start winning again finally (195)?  Who helps Hector turn the battle in favor of the Trojans again (196)?
3. Who wears Achilles’ armor and leads the Greeks to fight back?  What happens to him (197)?
4. What gets Achilles to fight again, and what armor does he use?
5. What happens when Achilles and Hector finally meet? Describe the battle.
6. What does Achilles do to Hector’s body (199)?

1. How does Paris escape from Menelaus?
2. Why do the Greeks and Trojans start fighting after the one-on-one battle (192)?
3. How does Aeneas escape death from Diomedes?
4. How is Ares scared away from helping the Trojans on the battlefield?
5. What does Hector pray for, and how does Athena respond?
6. After praying, who does Hector talk to?
7. Why do the Trojans do so well the next time they are on the battlefield (194-195)?

Which goddess "wins" the competition of who is fairest?  How does Paris violate Menelaus's hospitality and trust?  Why can't the Greeks leave for war against the Trojans?  What sacrifice must they make?

Welcome back, students!  Semester TWO starts today, and as of this moment every student has a 100% A grade.  Our first assignment is due tomorrow.

World Literature
1.  Finish copying the class rules.  We will turn in the printed copy tomorrow.
2.  Clean out your English binder section.  Don't throw it away - store last semester's work!  Keep mythology notes and work.
3.  Get all paper and supplies you will need for the semester.  This includes a three inch binder, blank paper, multiple pens, and the books you'll need.

Composition
