1. (extra credit) VPP 10-13 = one sentence using each word (you may use VPP sentence completion sentence starters). I recommend that you do one lesson each night. All 60 are due on Monday.
2. Vocabulary midterm crossword
3. Read Of Mice & Men chapter 5. When finished, write a letter as if you are Curley's wife writing to her sister. These are the requirements:
-You are Curley's wife, so it must be written in first person
-It should be about a page long
-It must be in letter format (Dear ____ at the beginning, Yours Truly or something at the end).
-It must reference 2 or more specific events mentioned in the book
-It must include your feelings about your (Curley's wife's) life

2. Read TFA (Things Fall Apart) chapters 11 & 12. Answer the chapter 11 & 12 questions on the questions sheet. In case you missed them, the questions are as follows:

1. What is the theme of the story of the tortoise and the feast in the sky? Remember that a theme is a statement about how things are in life.

2. Why does Ekwefi follow Chielo and Ezinma? Why is Ezinma important to her?

3. What does Okonkwo end up doing (at the end of ch 11 – it is explained a bit more in ch 12)? Why is Ekwefi grateful? Why does this remind her of when they were young lovers?

4. Once again the event with Ezinma shows another side to Okonkwo. What does this show about him?

5. How do the villagers of Umuofia feel about the huge marketplace of Umuike?

6. What are the in-laws of the suitor of Obierika’s daughter supposed to bring to the celebration? Do they come through and act “like men” even though they are known for being “closefisted” (stingy)?

7. What do you think the lyrics to the “latest song” in the village mean?

1. How does Okonkwo feel about his daughter Ezinma?
2. How does Okonkwo feel about himself after the death of Ikemefuna?
3. How does Obierika feel about the killing of Ikemefuna? How is his attitude different than Okonkwo’s?
4. Why is Okonkwo confused about Ogbuefi Ndulue, the old man in the other tribe that died, who he thought was a ‘strong man’? What makes him less ‘strong’ in Okonkwo’s opinion (but not necessarily in Obierika’s opinion or Ofoedu’s opinion)?
5. What difference is there in the different clan cultures regarding tapping trees and the ozo title?
6. How do the families bargain the dowry of Obierika’s daughter?
7. What are three different practices in different cultures that are mentioned regarding dowries at the end of the chapter? List what the traditions are.
8. How do the clan members talking about the cultural differences react to these differences?
9. What do they say about the “white men”: What interesting thing have they heard about them, and why might they think that?
